Alka Seltzer Rockets!

 

THIS EXPIREMENT REQUIRES ADULT SUPERVISION

Supplies:Safety goggles / Alka Seltzer, brand or generic / white film cannister with snap on cap/ water

Science: The chemical reaaction between alka seltzer and water produced the gas Carbon Dioxide which expands to (over)fill the cannister. The pressure pops the top off!

  1. Gather a few WHITE film canisters from your local pharmacy or film developer. ( white ones have a better seal than the grey or black ones)
  2. break an Alka Seltzer tablet into 4ths
  3. Put on Safety goggles
  4. put two quarters into the canister then add a very small amount of water
  5. Immediately snap the lid on the cannister, turn it over and STAND BACK!!!

It's fun to count backwards and estimate whan it will explode. If you see bubbles around the base, your cannister does not have a tight enough seal. It may still explode eventually.

WARNING: If rocket does not explode, place one hand over the cannister and use the other hand to pop the top off and release the pressure. Do NOT lean over the cannister of severe eye damage cuold be casued by an unwxpected explosion!
